Cradle of Aviation Museum - Long Island, NY

Writer: PeterPeter

One of the best features of the Durham Museum of Life & Science’s membership is the reciprocity perk. All over the country, there are other similar science centers, museums, zoos, and aquariums that reciprocate the membership, and allow you to get into their institution for free or a reduced price. While this isn’t our usual content (and this is not an ad), we’re in the holiday travel season, and this is something that has been incredibly useful and money-saving for us. We know multiple people here have families up North that they travel to visit, so hopefully this may be helpful for them, too. (And honestly for anyone traveling because there are great reciprocity places everywhere.)

If you have kids who are into planes (and a little bit of outer space, too), the Cradle of Aviation in Long Island, NY has free entry with your Life & Science membership. (A $68 savings for our family of 4.)

The main exhibit tells the history of flight in the US with incredible life-size planes and replicas and interactive exhibits. And I mean like go-in-a-real-plane-cockpit interactive exhibits. Video flight simulators are another fun addition.

The first floor also houses a smaller kids play room for ages 6 & under, and a cafe. The cafe has your standard fast food fair, and we felt the prices were pretty reasonable. (There’s a meal deal with a main, side, and a drink for $12.)

There is also a planetarium, which does cost extra, but your Life & Science membership gets you the member price. (We haven’t done this feature yet, but plan to in the future.)

The upper floor currently houses an exhibit detailing the history of Pan Am.

And finally, while this museum was enough for us and the kids, there are other options close by to make an even longer day of it. The Long Island Children’s Museum is also included on the membership and is nearby. The Firefighter’s Museum is literally attached to Cradle of Aviation, but is not on the membership reciprocity. However, a ticket is only $7.
