Historic Oak View County Park - November Pecan Picking - Raleigh, NC

Whether you say it peh-CON or PEA-can, make sure to not miss out on Pecan Pickin’ Month at Historic Oak View. The large field by the goats’ enclosure at this park is a pecan orchard, and during the month of November, Historic Oak View County Park welcomes visitors to take some pecans home with them free of charge. Free brown paper bags are provided at a table outside the park office next to a sign with information about what to look for when collecting pecans. As per the rules, there is a one-bag limit per family.

We spoke with some Parks’ employees we saw today, and they mentioned it was a good harvest this year.

Our best tips are:

* GO EARLY. Last year we went on November 20th and it was hard to find any good pecans left.

* Schlep to the back of the orchard - it’s really not a far walk and you will have a better selection by those trees. The trees by the goats are easy pickings, so those get cleared out quickly.

* Put your pecans in a ziplock bag in the freezer for a few days before cracking them just in case something.... unexpected made a home in them.

Have you collected pecans at Historic Oak View? Let us know in the comments!
