Historic Occoneechee Speedway - Hillsborough, NC

Still looking for something to do for Father’s Day? Have a dad who likes cars, the outdoors, history, or all of the above? Then historic Occoneechee Speedway Trail is the place you need to check out this weekend.

We first learned about this Hillsborough gem from one of our favorite local accounts, NC Eat & Play (who you should totally be following, by the way). Occoneechee Speedway was one of the first 2 NASCAR tracks to open, with an inaugural season in 1949. The track has not been used in over 50 years, and is now home to a beautiful set of nature trails with restored buildings and old cars. Multiple informational signs appear at the location so you can learn more details about the history that was made here.

One thing we loved about this outdoor area is that is was extremely walkable - most of the trails were flat - and you didn’t have to walk for miles to get to the historic features.

We would recommend arriving early if possible. We arrived on a Sunday morning at about 9:30 and the parking lot was almost full. When we left at about 11:30, the lot was full and multiple people were parked on the side of the road. However, even though, the lot was full, we did not feel like the park was crowded.

We’ll be sharing our full Instastories soon so you can see more about this awesome historic location, but we highly recommend getting out and exploring it for yourself this weekend!
