If you’ve been following our page for a while, you’ve probably heard me say before that free is always the right price. And this is one of the reasons I mentioned in my last post that Wake County Parks’ Lake Crabtree County Park is one of the most underrated in the Triangle. Besides for just being gorgeous and a great place to spend a day, the park also offers FREE boat and fishing tackle rental.
Boating is available only during the summer (you still have through Sept. 19 on the weekends to take advantage of this!), but it appears the tackle loan program is year-round. I’ve included information about these programs in photos 6 & 9. (Do make sure you have a valid fishing license, which can be purchased online, if you would like to go fishing. Free fishing license are available for individuals in need who receive Medicaid, Food Stamps, or Work First Family Assistance through their county’s Department of Social Services.)
Even if fishing or boating isn’t your thing, head to the park to climb the approximately 35 steps in the tower you see in this first photo for great views. Take a walk along the lake and spend some time relaxing in the tucked-away gazebo you see in photo 8.
The park amenities mentioned in this post can easily be reached if you park in the lots on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th right-turnoffs from the main road that runs through the park. The whole park is very accessible, though, so you could also park in any of the other lots and take a short walk if need be.
There are bathrooms available right at the boathouse tower. The area here was also accessible, with ramps that allow you to get down to the docks, and a paved path to get to the gazebo.
Ruth and I truly had a pleasant day relaxing by the water, and our family is looking forward to boating and fishing here in the future.
