Accessibility. It’s honestly a topic not discussed enough when it comes to playgrounds. I think about this frequently when we go to parks and whenever new playground equipment is put in anywhere, it leaves me scratching my head that we’re not thinking more about making structures accessible for more kids.
In this vein, today I’m happy to share a lesser known accessible park in the Triangle: Durham’s Morreene Road Park. While this park isn’t perfect and more could be done (accessible swings, for instance), this is another great option for kids of all abilities.
This is also a great park for really little kids and new walkers due to the gentle inclines, squishy ground, and some low slides.
A bathroom is right next to the park, along with various sports courts and fields, and there is plenty of parking. There is also a little lending library by the office building.
There is a covered picnic table by the playground, but otherwise shade is sparse.
I have actually been holding onto this post for months - we went during the summer 🥵 - because the lack of shade makes this a great winter park.
What is your favorite accessible park or playground in the Triangle? Or do you have any favorite parks you like to visit in the winter? Let us know in the comments!
