Holiday weekends = a lot of air travel, which makes it the perfect weekend to check out one of our favorite non-traditional parks in the Triangle: the RDU Airport Observation Deck Park.
🛫
Located on RDU property, this is a fantastic place to kill some time with your kids, or really anyone who loves planes. The deck overlooks RDU’s 10,000 foot runway, making it perfect to watch take-offs and landings. A speaker on the deck also plays pilot-tower communications from the planes.
🛫
The park is not particularly large, though, which also means not a lot of parking. However, we’ve never seen it packed with people and have always been able to find a spot and keep our distance from others.
🛫
Come prepared: the wind can make it a bit chilly this time of year, so bring materials to bundle yourself up just in case.
🛫
Besides for the deck, there’s also an open grass play area with picnic tables, a mock runway, a small jungle gym in a sand pit, and informational placards.
🛫
The website says the park also has restrooms and is open daily from 9:00 am until sunset.
