As so frequently happens to us, this amazing park was found by chance while on the way to investigate another park from our earlier post (Savannah’s Playground) in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Warbird Park is located right behind Myrtle Beach International Airport and sits on an old Air Force Base. While you might not spend a ton of time here, it’s still definitely a must-stop spot for kids because they can get right up next to the planes, which were actual planes used at the base before its closure in 1993.
We also appreciated the beautiful memorials to those who have served, including a very moving one for 9/11 with a piece of a beam from one of the World Trade Center buildings.
The park also has some nice shaded areas with benches and tables where you can sit and watch planes taking off from the airport. Bring your bug spray, though, because we did get a few mosquito bites.
There was not a lot of parking here, but it didn’t seem to matter much because we were the only ones there. Also, unfortunately, there were no bathrooms. Not something we needed in the short time we visited, but still notable.
Last note: you can only enter the park from one direction (there’s no space in the median to cut across to the park when you’re on the opposite side of the road), so we ended up going to the nearby light, making a left turn and then immediately going into the gas station on the corner. From there you can take a right back onto Farrow Parkway and get back to the park. I know, it seems like a lot, but it really was easy when doing it. 😂
